Theatrum Kuks

We offer arts residency in the village of Kuks, part of an inspiring Baroque complex situated on both shores of the Elbe River, marked by its distinctive genius loci and rich cultural history. Our program builds upon the early 18th century when the Kuks spa was a European centre of art, culture, and social life.

We are interested in smaller groups or individuals working in various fields of art and culture. Besides visual and sound arts and performing arts, we would welcome authors, playwrights and translators for literary residencies, graphic designers, photographers and similar. Individuals can work within the apartment year-round.

About the venue:

• We can provide the Anchor apartment itself as a workspace for individuals or small groups – 2 bedrooms, 4 beds, small kitchen(corner), bathroom with shower and toilet, internet
• Comoedien-Haus – gallery/theatre in a remodelled barn, its wooden stage measures 8 m (width) × 4 m (depth) × 30 cm (height). To the side of the auditorium (8 m wide, 8 m deep, sandstone flooring), there is a “theatre within a theatre,” a replica of the Baroque Carro Commediale stage cart on wheels, which serves as an additional (puppet) stage. The space accommodates approximately 4–5 artists and is equipped with ventilation, a projector, and a screen. The space is not heated. In the summer months (June-August) it is open to the public as a Gallery of Puppets.
• Rentz Museum Garden – the residency also provides access to the garden of the Rentz Museum of Baroque Printmaking, located a 2-minute walk from Comoedien-Haus, which includes a replica of an open-air small wooden stage.
• Hall of the Municipal Inn – in collaboration with the Kuks municipality, we also offer the hall of the Municipal Inn on the Elbe Riverbank, equipped with heating and available year-round. The hall is also used by local community groups and measures 15 × 7 m.

Accommodation is provided in an apartment within the historic U Kotvy House. The apartment includes two rooms – a bedroom with a double bed and a living room with two single beds – as well as a kitchenette equipped with an electric stove, fridge, microwave and a bathroom with a shower. The apartment is heated and suitable for desk-based residencies, such as literary, translation, and similar activities, or a residency for cultural professionals. There is internet connection available.

Accommodation can also be arranged in two apartments near the Comoedien-Haus (up to 7).

There is no supermarket in the village. The nearest town with services is about 7km away in both directions. There is a bus and train connection. In the village itself, there is the Municipal Inn open year-round and additional restaurants/cafes open from spring to fall.
